However, when these one-way valves in your veins become less functional, fluid stops moving as efficiently through your circulation, and it starts to pool. This “stasis,” or lack of efficient flow, can lead to skin changes known as stasis dermatitis or varicose eczema. You may experience a color change in the skin of your lower legs and feet. Your skin may become red, thickened, flaky and more fragile.
Varicose Veins and Skin Ulcers
In much the same way that varicose veins are connected to stasis dermatitis, they are also connected to skin ulcers. When fluid pools in your lower legs, it can cause skin changes that can ultimately lead to the breakdown of your skin. An ulcer may start as skin discoloration—such as reddened or brown skin. Then, you may notice that the area becomes larger or causes pain. Eventually, if the area cannot heal on its own, the skin may break down. This may cause a shallow wound known as an ulcer.
